A Thai Folk Art Carved Wooden Rabbit

A charming traditional Thai coconut grater, hand-carved in the form of a recumbent rabbit, with an elongated body, simplified features and an iron scraping blade projecting from its nose.

Known in Thailand as a kratai khut maprao, these domestic implements were used to grate fresh coconut, the user sitting astride the wooden body whilst working the coconut against the iron blade.

An especially sculptural example, retaining a beautifully worn surface and mellow patina acquired through years of use.
